FastDay Friends Weekly: You can do THAT with a cauliflower?

View this email in your browser

Hey errantbehavior, how are you?

With the festive season looming ever closer I'm starting to prepare an article with tips for festive fasters. If you've fasted over the holidays before I'd love to hear what tips and tricks helped you get through them without piling on the pounds!

Corey looks like a new man since losing 35lbs with 5:2 fasting...

"I started my health journey 6 months ago. After spending most of my adult life fluctuating between overweight and obese, I decided my lifestyle needed to change. I began looking into vitamins and minerals. Along the way a good friend mentioned fasting but I originally rejected the idea as 'crazy'..."

How do the different fasting methods affect the benefits of fasting?

Investigations into how best to fast are in their infancy but there are indications that, within limits, a longer period without any calorie intake may be better than spreading your calorie allowance over the day.

What's the buzz?

By the time you finish reading, you'll be itching to buy yourself a cauliflower and try out these amazingly inventive cauliflower recipes – especially when you see how low calorie they are!

Leek and Crunchy Carrot Gratin

265 calories per serving

A yummy leek based vegetarian main dish, or a good accompaniment to sausages (baked in the oven at the same time). With the vegetables, milk, cheese, breadcrumbs and nuts, this has a good balance of ingredients.

Stand up and be counted!

Last week we asked how you got on if you fasted over the festive season before.
Although 28% of you haven't had a fasting festive season yet, of those who have more than a half of you managed to maintain or even lose a little bit of weight, while a further third managed to only gain a little. Bearing in mind the average festive gain is around 6lbs I think fasters have done very well.

If you need some tips for fasting over the festive season, check out this blog post I wrote last year. I'm currently updating it to feature on FastDay and would welcome any
additional tips from (festive) seasoned fasters!

This week we're asking:
Do you vary your fasting methods?

The Weekly Vote

Last week we asked how you count your calories on a fast day and it seems that a fair few of you (30%) like to measure your meals as accurately as possible, while a further 30% of you have made your meals so many times you know what's in them already! It's great to see that 14% of you feel you've learned enough during your time fasting to be able to judge the calorie contents of your meals as you make them. I think it's wonderful how the longer we've been fasting, the more we seem to understand what's in our food.

If you need a bit of extra help with how to count your calories, check out this handy article full of great links & tools.

FastDay Friends Weekly: Issue 10

Hiya, errantbehavior, how's it going?

This week at the forum we've had an influx of returning fasters. It's great to see people coming back to this way of eating after taking a break for whatever reason. If you're starting again, why not read our guides to help get you back to basics? You might also find it helpful to pair up with a fasting buddy for extra support & encouragement!

Mary-Ann found a healthy way of eating for life, and lost over 50lbs!

"At the age of 14, weighing a slightly heavy, but athletic 130lbs, I stopped eating. This lasted a year, after which I weighed 75lbs (I was probably 5'3"-5'4" at the time). At some point it hit me how scary it was being so underweight and I started eating again. I ended up at ~150lbs..."

Balancing calories used with calories eaten

Unless they are really trying, most people maintain a fairly stable weight, gaining or losing weight very gradually. How does the body regulate our weight?

What's the buzz?

Our first fasts are quite an experience, something we always remember and we certainly  can learn a lot from them...

Savoury Cauliflower Rice

140 calories per serving - serves 4

A great low calorie (and low carb) meal or side dish, ideal as a more filling and flavoursome replacement for rice or cous cous. Once you've tried this, you'll wish you discovered it sooner!

The Weekly Vote

Last week we asked you which areas of the FastDay site you find the most useful - and not surprisingly the overwhelming majority of you voted for the forums and the progress tracker. It seems I should have either left the two obvious choices off or allowed you to vote for an extra option as there were minimal votes available for other areas of the site - doh! I do hope this isn't truly indicative of FastDayers not using other areas of the website, there's so much to be found in our food, fasting library and buzz sections - not to mention all the fantastic success stories (which I forgot to mention, double doh!).
