FastDay Friends Weekly: Why do we eat more than we need?

View this email in your browser

Hi there errantbehavior, how's it going?

For many of us in the UK, this week has been a week off as it's been half term for schools. Sometimes it can be more difficult to stick to your fasting habits when you're at home and especially if the family is around, wanting to enjoy treats together.

How have you coped this week?

I'd love to hear your tips for fasting during the school holidays, it would be great to compile some tips together ahead of the imminent Easter and (they'll be here sooner than you think!) summer holidays. You can reply directly to this email with your suggestions - and I promise I'll respond :)

Kirstin needed to lose weight so she could give her sister a kidney...

"So, six months ago... I'd never really realised that the weight had started to build up. Can't imagine how it happened! It was only after my sister got to the stage of needing a kidney transplant that the matter of my size came to my attention..."

Why do we eat more than we need, and gain weight?

The constant availability of high sugar, high fat food is just one of the factors driving the obesity crisis: we delve deeper.

What's the buzz?

We know losing weight is difficult, and that different things work for different people. However, there are some diets...

"Murgh Moog" Indian Takeaway Style Curry Sauce

166 calories per serving

This is actually a recipe I posted up myself, based on one I was taught by a friend's husband who had an Indian restaurant. The sauce itself is as good as anything from your local curry house and is just 166 calories per serving, allowing plenty for your meat or vegetables in the sauce as well as a side such as brown rice or cauliflower rice.

FastDay Friends Weekly: Is 'starvation mode' a real thing?

Love is in the air, errantbehavior!

Well yes, we all know yesterday was Valentine's Day, but love isn't something we should feel for just one day of the year. I don't know about you, but every day I am reminded of how much I love intermittent fasting! Just the other day a friend came to visit me - she is a member of a well known slimming club (I don't know why she won't try 5:2) - and she mentioned she was worried about going out to dinner for Valentine's Day, which would 'ruin' her diet.

Oh how I love 5:2! I'm not at all worried about what I ate out at dinner last night, because I now understand so much more about my body and nutrition than I did in my many years of previous diets. One day does not 'ruin' anything when you follow a Way of Eating! I hope you feel the same, and if not, why not read a bit more of the great science content at the FastDay site, all written in a way which can be easily understood :)

Karen wanted to lose weight for her wedding - 5:2 was the answer!

"I met my Husband 4 years ago and ours is the usual story full of contentment, fancy dinners, takeaways and wine. Not to mention that he's a very good cook so I felt obliged to sample everything..."

FastDay Friends Weekly: Food & Mood, what's the connection?

Have you noticed any changes, errantbehavior?

There's no doubt about it, when I was unwell last year and unable to fast for a long while, I comfort ate. I knew I didn't need it (and it didn't help that people kept bringing me 'treats' to cheer me up), but I ate it anyway. It's a tough habit to break! In the last few months as I've been able to fast again, I find my relationship with food is improving - carrot sticks and hummus actually taste better than fries and I love it! Have you noticed these changes since you've been fasting?

Ana Sofia lost almost a third of her body weight thanks to 5:2!

"I've always loved food and cooking, and it had been a safe place to go all my life. Also I've been asthmatic since birth so I didn't do much exercise most of my life and some of my meds make me gain some weight..."

Vietnamese Spring Rolls

From Rachel Cotterill's fantastic recipe blog comes this simple but healthy and filling recipe. She says:

"These spring rolls are well suited to the 5:2 diet. Each roll has just under 100 calories; you could use a simple soy sauce for low-calorie dipping."
